What is heartburn?
So, you know that you feel a miserable burning sensation in your throat and chest but you aren’t quite sure what’s going on in there. Heartburn, also called indigestion, occurs when the acids in your stomach travel backwards into the esophagus. Heartburn is often a very good indicator that you are dealing with a condition known as gastroesophageal reflux (GERD).
How do you know it’s heartburn?
Anytime people experience this burning sensation in their chest they worry that it might actually be their heart and not heartburn at all. Of course, if you are dealing with a heart condition you may notice heart palpitations or changes in the rhythm of your heart. What can cause heartburn?
Heartburn can occur after eating certain acidic or spicy foods, after eating a large meal in one sitting, or after lying down or going to bed immediately after eating. Those who are overweight or obese, as well as pregnant women are more likely to deal with heartburn.
